It's high time The NY Times came to it's senses!! Now START reporting on Trump for real! His garbled, meandering, lie-filled hate filled speeches need coverage!
I'm glad the NYT editors back Kamala, but really the coverage of Trump and Vance, as though they were typical candidates, is beyond belief. The piece from yesterday covering how Trump is a mentor to Vance?? That was beyond creepy, making it sound like a father-son relationship. I am so disgusted by them (NYT) Coverage is abysmal puff pieces and gauzy looks at those monsters😡
Thanks for sharing this Bill. I'm one of those who cancelled my subscription when the Times stopped being a professional newspaper. The editorial represents the first step on a long road back to respectability for the Times and one hopes they'll continue on that path and that such other media outlets as may still take their direction as a lead will follow on in endorsing Vice President Harris and making it clear that the failed insurrectionist has no business returning to the political world.
If I had written it, I would have asked why Trump hadn't been jailed yet for attempting to overthrow the government and stealing Top Secrets. Crimes committed over three years ago!
I still subscribe as my credit card pays for the subscription. Glad to see the Editorial Board come out so strongly though I couldn’t help but notice the whining over her lack of willingness to hold spontaneous interviews about policy. Didn’t she release an 80+ page policy paper last week? Maybe they should read it rather than push the narrative that she’s light on policy.
Thank you for the link, Bill. Reading this has been restorative to my faith in common sense. I can only hope that the NYT clearly stated position against putting a vindictive and narcissistic madman in the White House again will move more people to vote for Kamala Harris.
Thanks for sharing this Bill. I cancelled my subscription to the NY Times quite a while ago and won't be going back anytime soon. They have been a tool for conservative voices for a few years now. For me, the final straw was when they allowed yet another looney tune column from J J McCullough to supposedly speak on behalf of all Canadians as if we are some sort of monolith in our thinking in Canada. And if we were, he / she is definitely an outlier. Of course, the misinformation, (and downright lies), Ross Douthat and Bret Stephens were permitted to vomit forth made me want to strangle my computer screen already, so it was an easy decision.
My cord with NYT was severed (and will remain so) after my second tour in Iraq (2005), though they are not alone on a long list of other mainstream media I will never support again.
A redemption clause for NYT is just as disingenuous as Vance giving credit to his boss for sparing Obama care or participating in a peaceful transfer of power. They don’t get credit or a chance to be overlooked for being wrong by becoming the blind squirrel who fucking trips on a nut once a year. I have seen the sausage being made by NYT; some things you can’t unsee.
I have spent an enormous amount of my life bitching and moaning about all manner of human bullshit. And I am not done.
But as an old guy...in an effort to exit this world on a higher note, I am seeking out as much good stuff as I can. Celebrating it as it comes along.
The fact that NYTruculator, Wall Street Jerkal and the Washington Post It Notes have actually reported Trump as a "candidate" as opposed to a criminal fascist threat to our nation in EVERY piece of reporting on the Orange Menace... is evidence of the almost complete manipulation of the Fourth Estate by our Oligarchs.
It appears that this is a little more direct than the one they did in July when President Biden was still running. Unfortunately, the editorial staff doesn't hold sway over the news staff, or especially the headline writers. I think I'm seeing a little better reporting these days, but the deranged mango is making it hard for them to turn away. I would have preferred this endorsement to be more full-throated, and acknowledge that VP Harris has only been at this for a couple of months, while the other guy has been running nonstop since 2015. It bugs me when they make a fuss about her not having much substance. They should look at her website.
I still subscribe to the NYT. Not because it is always on point. Recently, it almost seemed like it had also been taken over by Rupert Murdoch or his minions and lackeys.
But, I think the NYT is just hedging since, honestly, there is a very good chance Trump will be President again. And, next time, he will just shut down "news" outlets that don't fawn over him like Tass and Pravda fawn over Putin.
So, NYT have been trying to stay in business by recognizing the risk of a Trump presidency. Which, is very, very real. I am in PA this weekend and there are more Trump signs than there are people here.
I could be very ugly soon Bill. I hope you have your passport active.
I have a minority last name so all of my family are now citizens of the EU (except me). My wife and kids are all citizens of Greece. If Trump starts rounding up people into camps, we are gone.
I hope that helps. But, I cannot see success if the US breaks up. The real strength of the US was what John Adams wrote first as the Massachusetts Constitution. A tripartite balance of powers selected by the people across the people.
If the US fractures into pieces each piece will be weak and without resources. Together, although since Reagan we have spent our way into a hole, we are stronger.
Better to be part of a real country in the EU. Especially one like Greece that has already seen its civil war come and gone recently.
Only problem is that Turkey wants Greece and intermittently they invade and try to kill everyone in Greece.
Maybe it is ugly everywhere Bill? :-) Maybe it is just that us humans are ugly?
Mike, please don't let fear keep hold of you. Trump will only win if he cheats. Of course he's going to cheat just like he did in 2016, and his MAGA Republicans have laid the groundwork for that, but the Dems have hired hundreds of attorneys to keep the elections free from interference. You can either worry incessantly up until Nov. 5 or you can do something pro-active to make sure Trump doesn't win. Planning to go to another country is not an answer for most of us. If you're going to jump ship, do it now because we don't need your negativity and helplessness. We need a decisive win and I'm working with others locally to ensure that.
Good to see, but newspaper endorsements only influence those that beleive newspapers. From Wikipedia, in 2016 Hillary got 500 endorsements vs 28 for Trump:
"Newspaper endorsements in the 2016 United States presidential election
Yes. You are right. And right up until the election, the "polls" had Hillary winning.
But if this editorial got just a few bench sitters on their feet to vote, it will be a help.
It is still astounding to me that sooo many people are still attracted to a stupid, arrogant bully. And even more astounding that they believe that Trump would actually help improve their lives. I guess they really think that the Chinese government would pay for those "10% on everything" tariffs. Ya just can't fix stupid.
Andy, do the folks across the street still have big Trump signs?
Yeah, his current sign is about 10'x4' - you see it as soon as you come over the hill from the harbor! One other neighbor has a "normal" Trump sign, but there's *at least* 20 Harris signs just in the harbor & village areas vs 3 Trumps. Much more than than '20 or '16. A few more Trump signs on the other side of town, to be expected.
I hope that the NYT endorsement *might* get some 3d party voters to see the light. 🫰

Read it. Better than usual for NYT, but still pretty tepid.
If I had written it, I would have asked why Trump hadn't been jailed yet for attempting to overthrow the government and stealing Top Secrets. Crimes committed over three years ago!

I giggled when I read "my credit card pays for my subscription".
😂 It’s one of the “perks” to offset the massive card fee.
I was going to ask you if your credit card would pay for a Lamborghini if I used it to buy one. 😆
😂👏 Naw, just free booze at the airport.
Consider fee-free cards, like Discover.
I have those too, but I like the perks of the high fee card, mainly when traveling.

Need more folks like you on Substack, Bill…you demonstrate one of the few capable of enjoying a strong Martini 🍸 during the mushroom 🤯cloud show.

No doubt the NY Times has failed to call out the sane washing and general bullshit of Trump.
But here is another example of some hard hitting reporting.

Bill, thanks, as always, for your writing.
