I think I will need daily (maybe hourly!) breaks from the insanity unfolding. I have to remind friends and family - and myself - to avoid the crap in the mainstream media, because it's designed to wear us down. Thank goodness for you, Heather Cox Richardson, Dan Rather, and a few others to remind me that there ARE people like us.
I agree with Senator Murphy, Bill. It will take some courage, but it is doable. Get rid of the "collect billions of dollars, but forget about winning" mentality of the current leadership of the campaign committees. Money does not elect legislators, voters do. We need more Democratic legislators who think like Chris Murphy. From the beginning of our republic in 1789 until 1981 people ran for office as a civic "duty" to support the Country and its citizens. Since 1981 too many would be legislators view running for office as a "get rich quick" scheme.
I am not sure that America will recover from its democratic mistake.
In some ways, I feel, that Americans sort of deserve the leaders they pick at this point.
There was plenty of information out there on Trump, nobody who wanted to see reality was blocked from seeing it.
And? America still went for a DEI white man. Trump's father had to pay for him to be admitted to Wharton, otherwise known as DEI for white folks. He did not have the academic background to get in. The ultimate in "affirmative action".
America went for a man with a history of abuse, crime, disrespect, bigotry and, on and on.....who was also a DEI candidate.
What more do we need to know about America, not Trump, to know that America is off track?
And? Perhaps it has always been off track..... since 1619.
I guess "off track" is an apt description since our government is going to be something like a train wreck.
I have always been disgusted and dismayed by the American dismissal of our heritage built on slavery. In the grand scheme of things, it was not that long ago.
On optimistic days, I like to think what we are about to experience is akin to being a teenaged country. Most teens go insane for awhile. Then most of them start to grow up and become responsible adults.
So we were nasty little kids in 1619. Then we learned some adolescent empathy. Now we are whacked out teens. Maybe growing up is next. One can only hope.
Maybe Chris Murphy is the candidate/leader that we need moving forward. He's certainly been more straightforward than, for instance, the Senate Minority "Leader". His comments track closely with the Atlantic article by Anne Applebaum that I posted a few minutes ago.
This is one of the best pieces that you've done Bill and the closing graphic is great. Baked pasta is always a balancing act but there's never anything wrong with more cheese.

As always Bill, you are spot on and well written.

Thanks Dave. I will read your piece today.
