Bill, glad to have found your essays. Saving the science, really means saving curiosity and critical thinking.
When we were young and TV was idealistic, there were programs, Mr. Wizard, and Bell Telephone Hour, that told useful stories of discovery. The concept of understanding nature, science is the word for that activity, still exists but has been overpowered by capitalistic consumption, it seems to me. Not just the USA, but many places in the news.
Curiosity in society seems to be actively suppressed in favor of accept and buy.
How could Mexico, a country long projected in our media as beneath our dignity elect a woman, scientist, atheist for president? We are all controlled…
The empire of the USA, democratic or republican, has been ruled by people interested in power and money. Scientists get less power than lawyers and MBA’s because that’s the way to short term profits. IMHO as a retired scientist.
Mr. Wizard! I loved that show. At the time I dreamed of being a scientist. But alas, my path led me elsewhere.
In the new society of my dreams: scientists, teachers, nurses and general practitioners would be paid on a ratio tied to CEO compensation (including stock options). Not sure what the ratio should be - but it should at least double their pay. And maybe it would put the brakes on CEO theft. There. Economic and social justice blended!
Nice, Bill! You had me at the crispy haddock with ample tartar sauce!
As the pmurT madministration continues to eschew science and trample on our right to talk about it, this kind of stuff is our nourishment. Thanks for the intro to UCS!
Do we know for sure that RFK's worm is dead? Absent a professional and independent medical evaluation, what evidence do we have?
In respect of the introductory hook, food is always an attention grabber, even when the superabundance of tartar sauce renders it a rare bit of indulgence. Like you, I hadn't heard of/from the UCS for a long time and wasn't sure they were still operating. Thanks Bill.

Thanks for commenting, as always.
I think I may continue to shamelessly use food as a "hook" :)
Great post, Bill—100% agree!

Thank you, Bill, great post.
Why any world leader isn’t asking themselves that question every day…
