Agreed. A combination of ineptitude and probably "kompromat" from decades past. People forget that Putins real religion is KGB and it's mission to destroy the West.
I strongly suggest that the type of activity portrayed in the excellent TV series called "The Americans" continues to this day.
Kompromat on Trump would be child's play for the KGB if they're have as good as the public image.
I'll check out The Americans; I really liked Keri Russell in The Diplomat, another impressive piece of work. I've been watching The West Wing and being reminded just how perceptive and maybe prophetic Sorkin was.
We get on YouTube almost every night to watch the previous night's monologues from Kimmel, Stewart, et al (and Colbert, when his show was still on). Laughing at the political shenanigans is the only way to stay sane.
I agree with everything you said about the Obama years. Let's not forget the 1990s. I recently finished a book that had nothing to do with politics, but at one point, the author mused about "that brief period of time bookended by the end of the Cold War... and the constitutional crisis of the 2000 presidential election... a time of boundless optimism, of genuine hope and excitement of the future... Everywhere the twentieth century's bad old demons [e.g., apartheid in South Africa, communism] were dying." Things weren't perfect, but we didn't have the craziness we have now.
