At least part of the reason for the Abandonment of Reason is that the wealthy folks who profit from war don't have to fight in them and really don't often lose much even if their 'side' comes out on the short end. Witness the ongoing existence of the Southern oligarchy in this country, the economic rise of Germany and Japan after WWII, Vietnam after that mess, and China once they rid their system of Maoism.
